Bioassay assessment of metarhizium anisopliae (metchnikoff) sorokin (deuteromycota: hyphomycetes) against Oncometopia facialis (signoret) (hemiptera: cicadellidae) BJM
Pria Júnior,Wolney Dalla; Lacava,Paulo Teixeira; Messias,Claudio Luiz; Azevedo,João Lúcio; Lacava,Pedro Magalhães.
Citrus Variegated Chlorosis (CVC) is an economically important, destructive disease in Brazil and is caused by Xylella fastidiosa and transmitted by sharpshooter insects. In this study, the efficacy of the fungus Metarhizium anisopliae in controlling the sharpshooter Oncometopia facialis was studied by bioassay conditions. In the bioassay, insects were sprayed with a suspension containing 5 X 10(7) conidia mL-1. Adults captured in the field were treated in groups of 10 in a total of 11 replications per treatment. Significant differences between the natural mortality and the mortality of insects treated with the fungus were observed 6 days after inoculations (P<0.05). These significant differences increased until 10 days after treatment. The fungus...

Biological parameters of Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) assayed with Bacillus thuringiensis berliner Scientia Agricola
Polanczyk,Ricardo Antonio; Alves,Sérgio Batista.
The bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a promising control agent of Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith). Besides the lethal effect on hosts, the entomopathogen may cause physiological alterations that hinder insects' feeding intake and reproduction. Larval and female pupa weight, oviposition and egg fecundity were determined in second instar S. frugiperda larvae infected with 39 Bt isolates in four bioassays. Sublethal effects were observed in the follow isolates: ESALQ 1.1, ESALQ 1.4, ESALQ 1.6, ESALQ 3.7, ESALQ 4.2 and ESALQ 5.2 (larval and female pupae weight); ESALQ 5.1 (larval weight); ESALQ 1.2 and ESALQ 3.7 (egg fecundity); ESALQ 3.7 (oviposition and egg fecundity); ESALQ 3.7 and ESALQ 5.2 (oviposition). Significant correlations were observed...

Colletotrichum nymphaeae var. entomophilum var. nov. a natural enemy of the citrus scale insect, Praelongorthezia praelonga (Hemiptera: Ortheziidae) Scientia Agricola
Wynns,Anja Amtoft; Jensen,Annette Bruun; Eilenberg,Jørgen; Delalibera Júnior,Italo.
ABSTRACT: The citrus scale insect Praelongorthezia praelonga (Douglas), a major pest of citrus and other economically important crops, has only two commonly documented natural enemies: an entomopathogenic strain of the fungus Colletotrichum nymphaeae (Pass.) Aa and several parasitoids. The entomopathogenic strain of C. nymphaeae, formerly recognized under the synonym C. gloeosporioides f. sp. ortheziidae, is under development for commercial application as a biological control agent in citrus in Brazil-the top exporter of citrus globally. The synonomy of C. gloeosporioides f. sp. ortheziidae with C. nymphaeae remains based on limited DNA sequence data and without morphological study. To qualify for future approval as a biological control agent by federal...

Detección de Malpighamoeba mellifcae (Protista: Amoebozoa) en Apis mellifera (Hymenoptera: Apidae)de Argentina Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.
Plischuk,Santiago; Lange,Carlos E..

Differential expression of the pr1A gene in Metarhizium anisopliae and Metarhizium acridum across different culture conditions and during pathogenesis Genet. Mol. Biol.
Leão,Mariele Porto Carneiro; Tiago,Patricia Vieira; Andreote,Fernando Dini; de Araújo,Welington Luiz; de Oliveira,Neiva Tinti.
The entomopathogenic fungi of the genus Metarhizium have several subtilisin-like proteases that are involved in pathogenesis and these have been used to investigate genes that are differentially expressed in response to different growth conditions. The identification and characterization of these proteases can provide insight into how the fungus is capable of infecting a wide variety of insects and adapt to different substrates. In addition, the pr1A gene has been used for the genetic improvement of strains used in pest control. In this study we used quantitative RT-PCR to assess the relative expression levels of the pr1A gene in M. anisopliae and M. acridum during growth in different culture conditions and during infection of the sugar cane borer,...

Field persistence of Bacillus thuringiensis on maize leaves (Zea mays L.) BJM
Haddad,Marinéia de Lara; Polanczyk,Ricardo Antonio; Alves,Sergio Batista; Garcia,Marcelo de Oliveira.
The persistence slope of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) based products in the field is an important parameter to evaluate their efficacy. The half-life, estimated based on persistence slope parameters, is one of the most effective tools to select microbial pesticides. The aim of this research was to study the relationship between viability loss of Bt spores on maize leaves and their concentration, comparing it with field persistence. The experimental design was split-plot on time, composed by maize plants, in which three concentrations (half, normal and double doses) of a Dipel commercial formulation were applied. In each plot three leaves in the upper part of three plants where randomly selected. Samples of these leaves were collected 3 to 72 hours after...

First report of the occurrence of Ophiocordyceps melolonthae (Ascomycota: Hypocreales: Ophiocordycipitaceae) in larvae of Diloboderus abderus Sturm (Coleoptera: Melolonthidae) in Brazil Biota Neotropica
Salgado-Neto,Geraldo; Valmorbida,Ivair; Guedes,Jerson Vanderlei Carús; Blume,Elena.
This note is the first report on the infection of Diloboderus abderus Sturm (Coleoptera: Melolonthidae) larvae by the fungusOphiocordyceps melolonthae (Hypocreales: Ophiocordycipitaceae) in subtropical Brazil. Identification was made possible by extraction and sequencing of the fungal DNA that was covering the larvae’s mouthparts, prothorax, cuticle, and digestive tract (alimentary canal). Amplification, sequencing and comparison of the ITS region of the ribosomal DNA with voucher sequences of GenBank were performed and were 95% similar to Ophiocordyceps melolonthae. The fungus is an entomopathogen which attacks Melolonthidae larvae, having scientific and economic importance because of the need for increased knowledge on its distribution and on...

Natural Enemies and Competitors of Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari) (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) in Colombia Neotropical Entomology
BUSTILLO,ALEX E.; CÁRDENAS,REINALDO; POSADA,FRANCISCO J..
The objective of this research was to survey and record the natural enemies and competitors of the Coffee Berry Borer (CBB) Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari) in the Colombian coffee region. Despite the recently introduction of CBB to Colombia, 25 natural enemies were recorded, including Beauveria bassiana. Except for this fungus, the other organisms are new records of natural enemies of CBB. This emphasizes the little knowledge about these natural control agents and competitors that can help to keep the CBB population under control. The predators were the group with higher number of natural enemies followed by the competitors, fungi, bacteria and protozoans. Only one parasitoid wasp was recorded attacking CBB adults.

Non-Target Effects of Dalaca pallens Blanchard Control Examined Through Principal Response Curves: A Guild Approach in Southern Chile Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Devotto,Luis; Cisternas,Ernesto; Carrillo,Roberto; Gerding,Marcos.
The non-target effects of biological control are a complex matter requiring a multi-approach analysis. A fungal biopesticide is under research to control the larval stages of the ghost moth Dalaca pallens Blanchard (Lepidoptera: Hepialidae) in southern Chile. A field experiment was conducted to compare the effects of the biological control agent Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin (10(12) spores ha-1) and the insecticide lambda-cyhalothrin (7.5 g active ingredient ha-1) on non-target invertebrate species belonging to different guilds. The soil invertebrates were collected by using pitfall trapping and soil coring before and after spraying the biocontrol agent or the insecticide. Caught individuals were assigned to predator, herbivore or decomposer...

Relationship between chemical properties of the soil and the occurrence of Bacillus thuringiensis Ciência Rural
Polanczyk,Ricardo Antonio; Zanúncio,José Cola; Alves,Sérgio Batista.
The soil and other substrates such as mushroom compounds are the main sources of new Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) isolates for Integrated Pest Management programs. This study describes the relationship between chemical properties of the soil (pH, OM, P3+, K1+, Ca2+, Mg2+, H1++Al3+, B3+, Cu2+, Fe2+, Mn2+ and Zn2+) and the occurrence of Bt in Brazil. A total of 1,197 bacterial colonies were obtained, being 512 of them identified as Bt. The Bt index (iBt), which is the relation between Bt colonies and bacterial counts ranged from 0.18 to 0.86. The iBt may be expressed with the formula: iBt= -0.4 + 0.6Ca2+ + 0.07Cu2+ + 0.009Fe2+ - 0.53Mg2+ -0.12Mn2+ + 1.26Zn2+. A cluster of samples with fewer colonies and a high negative correlation (antagonism) between Mn2+...
